Just got engaged? Your first 5 steps to start planning

What to do before you book anything

Congratulations! The ring is on, the news is out, and now everyone is asking the same question: so when is the wedding? Before you start browsing venues or pinning table settings, take a breath. These five steps will save you time, money, and stress later on.

1. Enjoy the moment first

There is no rush. Give yourselves a few weeks to celebrate the engagement before you start making decisions. The wedding industry will still be there. This is the only time you get to just be engaged without a to do list attached.

2. Talk about what matters to you both

Before looking at anything external, sit down together and talk about what kind of day you actually want. Big or small? Traditional or relaxed? Indoors or outdoors? These conversations will shape every decision that follows and help you avoid spending time on options that do not fit.

  • What is the general vibe you want?
  • How many people do you roughly want there?
  • Are there any non negotiables?
  • Is there anything you definitely do not want?

3. Set a rough budget

Budget comes before venue, before guest list, before everything else. Work out what you can realistically afford and whether family will be contributing. You do not need exact numbers yet, but having a range gives you boundaries to work within.

Read our full guide on how to build a wedding budget in the UK for a breakdown of typical categories and costs.

4. Draft an initial guest list

Your guest count affects your venue options, your catering costs, and your overall budget more than almost anything else. Start with a rough list now, even if it changes later. Splitting it into must invite, would like to invite, and evening only can help you stay flexible.

Our guide on building a wedding guest list covers the common decisions around plus ones, children, and work colleagues.

5. Start looking at dates and venues

Once you have a budget range and a rough guest count, you are ready to start researching venues. Popular venues in the UK book up 12 to 18 months ahead, so this is worth starting sooner rather than later. Keep in mind that your choice of date affects pricing, availability, and even the weather.

Check our guide to choosing your wedding date and our venue checklist to help you compare options.

What not to worry about yet

At this stage, you do not need to think about flowers, stationery, seating plans, or playlists. Those decisions come later and they will be easier once the big three, budget, guest list, and venue, are in place.

Ready to get organised from the start? Wedli gives you one place for your budget, guest list, tasks, and suppliers so nothing falls through the cracks.
